This lesson will take students through learning and practicing with the 9 Elements of Culture: Basic Needs, Family/Kin, Economics, History, Politics, Religion, Geography, Communication, Arts/Entertainment. After an introduction to each element, students will play the role of food anthropologists, and will use the text Hungry Planet: What the World Eats by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio to explore how these elements affect the diet of a family somewhere around the world, as depicted in the photojournal.
Students will solve a geography clue to identify a country that they will research. Students will rotate through a series of four stations to explore four different Hungry Planet families, and will create a ThingLink interactive image (free iPad app) to display their research findings.

2) Guiding PPT: Elements of Culture Introduction & Project Directions
3) PPT: Geography Clues for Identifying Each Family.
4) PPT: Hungry Planet Family Photos
5) Organizer: Notes Sheet, Project Directions/Organizer, & Samples (answers to elements of culture organizer provided on PPT, other answers will vary)
You will need to obtain a copy of the text Hungry Planet: What the World Eats by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio in order to have students most effectively explore each family. You will also need a map or globe if you plan to utilize the Aurasma app as I have detailed in the lesson plan. This is not necessary, however. This lesson was designed for use with iPads or Chromebooks, but it can certainly also be done on paper.
