This is a simple and engaging way to have your students show their comprehension of how species of plants and animals are connected within food chains and webs. Print the cards, cut them out, give one to each student, and have them build their own chains in the proper order. Each chain should start with the sun, but many of the other cards are interchangeable as long as a producer comes next. Once the chains have been created, pass out pieces of string to the producers and consumers to show how the chains can be interconnected to create a web. The cards include vocabulary that classifies the species based upon what they eat or if they produce food. The activity can be done as an introduction to the topic or practice.
