NEW!! This FUN and ENGAGING 1-2 day cross curricular and NGSS aligned activity on FOOD CHAINS challenges students in 3rd grade, 5th grade, and middle school to draw models of food chains from the picture book, Wolf Island, by Celia Godkin. Students learn that when a group of wolves accidentally leaves an island on a raft, the island gets disrupted. Populations of organisms go up or go down depending on their connection to the wolves. It’s a great cross curricular and engaging lesson that teaches students the importance of stability in an ecosystem as well as how energy and matter move through. The story is based off of the real Wolfe Island in Lake Ontario and purchasing the book to use for future years is worth it! However, links to a YouTube video read aloud, PowerPoint, and Amazon link to purchase are provided. This lesson is best used after students have been introduced to energy roles (producers, consumers, decomposers, etc.)
This resource is aligned to the following NGSS Performance Expectations:
3-LS2-1. Construct an argument that some animals form groups that help members survive. 3rd Graders may need extra help with this activity!
5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
MS-LS2-3. Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.
