This financial literacy whole lesson bundle is a good follow up and/or application activity after teaching the MyPlate nutrition guidelines. Students explore the USDA Food Cost guidelines for families of different sizes and income levels (most current data sheets available on the USDA Website: https://www.cnpp.usda.gov/USDAFoodPlansCostofFood/reports) Students identify the weekly food budget for a family of a given size, and use their math skills to calculate a daily and per-meal budget. Then, they create a meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner) that fits this budget and meets the MyPlate nutrition guidelines. Students use current pricing data from grocery circulars and local supermarket websites to plan their meal. For an additional challenge, students are given a "lifestyle" to consider as they plan their meal (ex. vegan, organic, gluten-free). Give your students the chance to experience the real-world challenge of budgeting and meal planning for people with diverse needs!
