Food Group Sorting Game
Before Thanksgiving, I like to teach a unit on Nutrition, and I always have my students complete this Food Group Sorting Game by sorting pictures of different foods into their designated food groups. Prior to the activity, we talk about healthy and unhealthy foods, and then why certain foods are labeled as vegetables, fruits, protein, grains, dairy, and fats/sweets. I usually set this out as a science center activity, but it can also be used in the math center as a sorting game! I have included a color version and a black and white version, which can be easily printed and colored to look like the color version, as well as a recording sheet to hold your students accountable for their work. There are six sorting mats, one for each of the six food groups: vegetables, fruit, protein, dairy, grains, fats/sweets. There are also 66 pictures of different foods for sorting practice: 12 for vegetables, 12 for fruit, 12 for protein, 6 for dairy, 10 for grains, and 14 for fats/sweets. I included many pictures so that students get extensive practice with recognizing which foods belong in each food group. The cards (only) can also be used with ESL students, so that they can learn to associate pictures with the correct word in English. I hope you and your students enjoy this sorting game!
