Here are some suggestions for how to use this resource;

• Use this resource to support student learning about Healthy Eating; students will learn about each food group and the types of food in each. They can sort and place them onto the appropriate card. Then, they can describe how the Food Guide* can be used to make healthy choices. You can order your own copy at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index-fra.php

• Choose several foods at random and then ask students to rank them as foods they should eat more or less often. Allow students to provide reasoning for their choices.

• Also includes 'Mon assiette' for students to practice putting together a day's worth of healthy food choices*. Students can choose foods and place them on their plate to according to the daily portions for each Food Group.

** I realize that ‘sucres et matières grasses’ is not considered a food group but I’ve included it so that students can consider how much of their diet consists of these foods and that they should only be eaten occasionally - à l’occasion.

• Use this resource to prompt student discussion about Healthy Bodies; food provides us with energy so our teeth, skin, bones and muscles can grow. Students can use the chart to compare how the number of servings our bodies need changes as we get older and discuss why.

• Use the food cards as flashcards too for practicing French vocabulary!

Set up;
~ Print the mats and foods. Cut them out and laminate for extended classroom use.
~ Students will then fill the mat with foods from that food group.
~ You may want to record student responses with pictures of completed mats and plates.

*A chart is included based on Canada's Food Guide (www.hc-sc.gc.ca) to help students find the appropriate number of servings based on their age.

******* UPDATE: ALL FOOD CARDS ARE LABELLED! *******
