This comprehensive set of activities builds awareness and knowledge of how organisms interact in a food web. These activities meet requirements for Texas TEKS 4.9a, 4.9b, and 5.9b. The activities also meet requirements for Common Core 5L.2.1. Definition posters and sample posters are available for these terms: PRODUCER, CONSUMER, DECOMPOSER, FOOD CHAIN,FOOD WEB, HERBIVORE, CARNIVORE, and OMNIVORE. . Students are given several food webs to analyze to determine where energy travels throughout the webs. One activity has students answer questions about the web using terms from the unit's posters. Students are then given a set of information cards about organisms in a prairie system. The diet and predators for each organism are listed. Students must determine where the organism fits in the system. Students are then asked to build a food web using those organsms to show how energy flows through the web. The role of the sun is stressed throughout the set of activities. These activities can be used as a whole class activity, journal activity, small group activities, or can be placed in a center.
