This laboratory is a series of fun and collaborative exercises to help you understand the concepts and terminology involved in food chains, food webs, keystone species, as well as productivity pyramids and biological magnification. These exercises will also allow your students to understand the impact of perturbations to these systems.
In this lab, students use photographs of various species to create a food web. Students will model the peer review process to ensure that their created web is accurate and complete. After the instructor removes a species from the food web, students determine the ramifications of the loss of this species to the web as a whole and make decisions about which species are keystone species.
