The format of this worksheet was inspired by the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning worksheets created by "The POGIL Project." The focus is on nutrients, vitamins, and mineral and their relation to diet and health. Students are required exercise skills in model analysis, data interpretation, reading comprehension, and research. Some of this is extra information that goes outside the scope of the NGSS, so this is meant as an extension for high-achieving or curious students who want to know more about how the molecules they consume affect their health.

NGSSHS-LS1-6
Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules. Emphasis is on using evidence from models and simulations to support explanations. Assessment does not include the details of the specific chemical reactions or identification of macromolecules.
NGSSMS-LS1-7
Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism. Emphasis is on describing that molecules are broken apart and put back together and that in this process, energy is released. Assessment does not include details of the chemical reactions for photosynthesis or respiration.
