Want some great introductory activities for identifying plants and animals based on their roles in the ecosystem? Students will be able to identify producers, consumers, decomposers, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores.
This packet includes:
- A matching assignment where the students will match the key words needed for the sorts to the correct definitions.
-A sort where students will have to identify whether each organism is a producer, consumer, or decomposer.
-A sort where students will have to identify whether each of the consumers is a herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore.
-A template where students will use the organisms in the sort to create as many food chains as possible.
I use all of these activities when I am introducing the lesson on categorizing plants and animals. These activities are great to use in partners or in small groups. I often use them for centers and have the answer keys ready for the students to check their own work. There is an answer key included for the first three activities. There are many different possibilities for the food chains so there is not an answer key included for this activity.
