Football Math Champions (FMC) is one of our favorite sports based math games. Our second edition has improved game play and added algebra. Kids love the game because they compete with one another and strive to learn math in order to win the game. Students learn math in an all new and exciting way, as they build their math skills and confidence. All games are correlated with the Common Core Math standards including the “Procedural skills and Fluency” key shift in mathematics (See math standards below).
The game is set up in three pairs of teams. Two teams play each other while the third team acts as the referees. The players roll dice to select the order of play. The Math Model is then selected. Next the first team rolls two die (implements the math model) and shouts out the answer to the math problem. The scoring chart will give all results and the game then continues just as in a real football game.
The length of the game should be decided at the beginning of the game. At the time limit the losing team will change places with the referees. The referees now become the second team and the game begins again. The referees keep score of all point results on the Basketball scoring chart.
Before playing Foottball Math Champions, it is important to familiarize students with the rules and to differentiate all students prior to play. Players with similar math skills should be placed in the same grouping. This will prevent frustration. Students with similar skills will believe they can win and if they don’t will simply study and try harder next time.
A Math Model and math problems can be selected for any math concept. The teacher must supply the various dice and the foottball token for game play or may use the dice and football token templates provided
