Product Description
I am celebrating my 100th follower with this complete unit on football and brain disease. Thank you for honoring me by being a follower.

Many of my students and I love football. Several of my boys play football. My brothers are football players. It is a way of life here in the midwest. However, my feelings have started to change as more information has come out about the dangers of football, primarily because of the head trauma that so many players endure.

This school year, I am using Kelly Gallagher’s Article of the Week to teach my students how to read complex nonfiction text. I created this unit based on one of the articles about football and the link to CTE. Here's what's included:

*Step-by-step instructions for implementation
*An interactive PowerPoint so that students can practice identifying pronouns and antecedents (one of the main causes of confusion when reading)
*Video clips of a Frontline episode on YouTube
*The original article from CNN
*A side-by-side, which pairs the original article with an easier translation of the text
*A place for written reflections
*A link to a Think Marks anchor chart by Just a Primary Girl
*Examples of student work
*Assessment
*Answer keys
*Link to a nonfiction article on the same topic, posted on ReadWorks.org, a free resource site for educators

Due to copyright laws and size constraints, I could not include all of these items in the free download. However, there are links within the unit plan so that you can access each item with just one click.

Thanks again for being a follower. Please leave a bit of feedback for me, as I am considering creating other units set up exactly like this one and would love to know what you think.

Happy Teaching!
