PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

As we work to prepare our students for upcoming writing assessments, we’re focused on teaching them to argue for or against an issue. This is a shift from the old methods of teaching persuasion. Persuasion involves changing a reader’s (or listener’s) mind, attempting to convince him/her to feel a certain way. In argument, the writer attempts to reveal a truth using evidence to support his/her position (regardless of the way the writer actually feels about the issue).

This graphic organizer is a great way for you to introduce students to the process of analyzing an argument—or developing their own. The organizer itself is pretty straightforward, and will guide students as they search for evidence to support both sides of the argument. I’ve also given you some tips on how to use the organizer in your classroom.

The For & Against Graphic Organizer will help you and your students to master CCSS Reading Standard 8 that applies to all curriculum areas. This standard focuses on three college and career readiness skills:

• The ability to delineate and evaluate specific claims
• The ability to delineate and evaluate the validity of the reasoning of the claim
• The ability to delineate and evaluate the sufficiency of evidence for the reasoning
