This unit contains 48 bird names, two vocabulary sorting sheets, a set of research cards for a mini-research project, and 30 terse verse riddles. I did not leave space for pictures on the research cards. Two suggestions for including drawings are having students use index cards with sketches on the back or attaching the research cards to drawing paper to create a bulletin board.
Here are two websites that are excellent resources for both adult and student information:
Audubon -- http://www.audubon.org/
Anyone who has studied birds knows about the Audubon Society. They have developed a website specifically for grades 3-5: http://www.audubonadventures.org/ . The website was free as of this writing. There is an opportunity to subscribe to a magazine.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology also has a website: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/ . It has interactive activities, live bird cams, and a search feature to identify birds. (You don’t have to spell the bird name correctly, to get what you are looking for. I checked.
Just for fun -- Terse Verse are riddles where the answer is two rhyming words. In this case one of the words is from included bird name list and I tried to include a hint in the question.
