Stretch your students' vocabulary by replacing basic, every day words with high-level alternatives. Challenge students to use this as a tool for both their writing and speaking. The document includes two pages with 25 common words and their more sophisticated alternatives, formatted in three columns so they can be copied front and back. This can also be a great springboard into a lesson on shades of meaning. For example, the word happy has shades of meaning ranging from content to ecstatic.
