Did you know that energy changes occur when objects collide? There are cause-and-effect relationships between speed and energy. There is a relationship between the speed of an object to the energy of that object. One of the Science and Engineering Practices is planning and carrying out an investigation. Students will learn how to set up an investigation with independent, dependent, and control variables to test their ideas, record information, and form a conclusion. Students will also learn about potential and kinetic energy. ✅

This is a fantastic resource that includes so much. Students learn about speed and motion, but more importantly, several labs really go well with the standards. The labs were easy to do and used easy-to-find materials. Students loved being real scientists.

I love that the students had to actually think about variables and set up their own experiments. A great resource that helped me address several learning targets.
The labs require only a few materials: pennies, tennis balls, marbles or bouncy balls, and something to make a ramp.

Utah SEEd Standard 4.2.1
Construct an explanation to describe the cause and effect relationship between the speed of an object and the energy of that object. Emphasize using qualitative descriptions of the relationship between speed and energy like fast, slow, strong, or weak. An example could include a ball that is kicked hard has more energy and travels a greater distance than a ball that is kicked softly. (PS3.A)

Ask questions and make observations about the changes in energy that occur when objects collide. Emphasize that energy is transferred when objects collide and may be converted to different forms of energy. Examples could include changes in speed when one moving ball collides with another or the transfer of energy when a toy car hits a wall. (PS3.B, PS3.
