This hands on force and motion unit supports 3.P.1 of the NC Essential Standards, but it is a well-rounded, fun and engaging, unit on forces and motion for any middle to upper elementary student! This unit includes a virtual option. (I added some important concepts as I thought the NC standard was lacking.) Please look at the preview to see EVERYTHING this unit includes.

I'm in charge of teaching my team's math and science and math comes first, so I need my science to be informative, fun, and not take too long on writing the information down. I love all of the foldable stuff, but it takes too long for my students. I would rather them be spending that time on a neat science activity than folding, cutting, coloring, and gluing. I found a way for the students to still be accountable, but not take much time to get the learned information down. Plus, my students' notebooks still look awesome at the end of the year - maybe just not as cutesy!

This unit includes a lot of opportunities for fun, hands-on activities! Students get to draw illustrations to match concepts, measure forces, do an experiment on speed, make a compass, and be involved in 5 super fun stations centered around forces and motion! Check out the preview to see more in detail.

The unit test comes in a paper and a Google Forms version for automatic grading!

I also included a fun, semi-interactive (not SmartBoard but student interactive) PowerPoint for students to participate in at the end of the unit. It is a fun way to wrap up the unit that the kids love!! Check out the preview to see more in detail.

In this force and motion unit, students will:

•Label pictures as potential or kinetic energy

•Draw their own illustrations to represent each of the 3 Laws of Motion

•Categorize pushes and pulls in a sort

•Use spring scales (optional) to measure the force it takes to pull weights

•Fill in 4 BIG ideas about gravity and draw their own illustrations to represent each one

•Make a rudimentary compass

•Experiment with speed and direction

•Test different objects to see if they’re magnetic or not

•Experiment to see if height, mass, or friction affects an object’s speed or energy

•Build a mini-roller coaster

•Experiment with different objects to see which one falls to the ground first

•Watch Videos

•Learn and Have Fun!

In this force and motion unit, students will learn:

•Vocabulary relative to this unit

•The 3 Laws of Motion

•Why seat belts are so important

•How much a Newton is

•How to use a spring scale

•4 Big ideas about gravity

•About the magnetic fields of a magnet and our planet Earth

•How a compass uses the Earth’s magnetic field to work

•How to make a compass, why it is important, and how to use one

•What types of objects are magnetic

•Ways to affect the amount of energy something has

•How air resistance affects the way an object falls when there’s an atmosphere

This force and motion unit includes:

•Detailed Lesson Plans - 6 lessons & 5 stations; 9 to 12 sessions

•All Student Sheets (PDF, editable, and google)

•Signs and directions to display at each station (PDF and editable)

•Vocab Quiz (PDF, editable, and google)

•2 Study Guides for the Unit Test (Easier and harder version) (PDF and editable)

•Unit Test (2 pages) *Also a Google Form version, PDF, editable

•Word Wall Cards for the Vocabulary (PDF and editable)

•Fun PowerPoint with Student Sheet (also Google)

•Answer Keys for anything that warrants it
