PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The module introduces students to 4 force and motion lessons. In linear motion students learn about force, mass and motion of a body. Through experimentation they understand effect of gravity on motion uphill and downhill. Lesson two contains activity that enables students to develop understanding of Newton’s laws of motion and their application in their daily life. Centripetal force is a higher level concept that introduces circular motion. Using simulation students study motion of various objects. The fourth lesson is simple machine. The main objective is for students to identify simple machine in the real world and distinguish between simple machine and compound machines. Resource links are provided for students to read information pertaining to each lesson, try quizzes, games and simulations.

Standard covered includes:
SPS7. Students will determine relationships among force, mass, and motion.
a. Apply Newton’s three laws to everyday situations by explaining the following:
• Inertia
• Relationship between force, mass and acceleration
• Equal and opposite forces
b. Calculate amounts of work and mechanical advantage using simple machines.
S8P5: Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature.
a. Recognize that every object exerts gravitational force on every other object and that the force exerted depends on how much mass the objects have and how far apart they are.
S8P3. Students will investigate relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects.
a. Determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration.
b. Demonstrate the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object in terms of gravity, inertia, and friction.
c. Demonstrate the effect of simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, wedge, screw, and wheel and axle) on work.
