In this lesson, students will learn the difference between mass and weight using a hands on lab exercise. Students will use different masses and spring scales to find weight in Newtons. Then, they graph this information and hopefully find acceleration due to gravity as their slope. This lab forces students to contemplate the relationship between mass and weight and the constant nature of acceleration due to gravity.
In this product there is background reading with pre-lab questions, procedures, and space to graph results. There is also a rough draft lab included with sentence starters for all the essential parts of a lab report: introduction, methods, results, results summary, and conclusion. This lab format works every time for me and helps build student confidence in such a large project.
