When a balloon is inflated and released without being knotted, it flies all over the place as the air escapes. The demonstrates the concept behind Newton's Third Law of Motion- for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Students will be challenged to harness this energy through the creation of a balloon powered car. This engaging activity allows students to design and think creatively while meeting a number of learning objectives. Materials are inexpensive (straws, cardboard, bottle lids, old CDs, etc.), and design ideas are plentiful on the internet. So, get building, and let the balloon car races begin!
