PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Looking for Simple Science Labs that turn complicated Physical Science Standards into kid-friendly concepts?

Before I begin teaching a Science Unit to my students I look at the standards I’m meant to cover and break them down into “Big Ideas” that the students will learn. I relate every lesson to one or more of these Big Ideas and prove them throughout the unit. I have found that this keeps me focused and intentional in my planning/teaching while allowing students to grasp new concepts in an organized way. This product will support your Forces & Motion Unit with Six Big Idea Concepts and Hands-On Investigations to prove each one.

For this Physical Science Unit on Forces, I took the following Content Standard...

The amount of change in movement of an object is based on the mass of the object and the amount of force exerted.

...and turned it into these Six Big Ideas each with a coordinating investigation!

Big Idea One
•A force is a push or a pull.
Big Idea Two
•Forces cause changes in motion.
Big Idea Three
•An object will keep doing whatever it is doing until a force acts on it. (Law of Inertia - Newton's First Law of Motion)
Big Idea Four
•A greater force causes a greater change in motion.
Big Idea Five
•The more weight/mass an object has, the more force it requires to move it.
Big Idea Six
•Motion is measured by speed. Speed = Distance/Time

In this Curriculum Guide you will find the following for each Big Idea:
--Big Idea Statement
--Materials Needed (simple, inexpensive items)
--Students Needed (how they will be grouped for the investigation)
--Class Time Needed
--Investigation Procedure for the Teacher (with Notes to Guide the Investigation)
--Lab Report (two on a page--sized for Interactive Science Notebooks)
--Lab Report (full-sized page)

Each Student Lab Report Page contains:
--Room for Student Name
--Big Idea
--Guiding Question
--Room to collect data during the investigation
--Sentence starter for lab conclusions

I have also included posters of each BIG IDEA for you to display.

I hope that you and your students enjoy this approach!
:-) Bethany
