This is an activity that I have had my students do in small groups or individually to practice recognizing and using foreign words in the English language. I usually have students use this activity on iPads, but I have also had them do this activity using MacBooks. (Please note that if you plan to use this activity on iPads, you must have the Keynote application installed, available in the App Store.) Students are given a sentence containing a foreign word. They click (or tap) on the foreign word. If they choose wrong, it tells them, then sends them back to the original sentence. If they choose correctly, it takes them to a new screen where they guess which language the word comes from. Again, if they guess wrong, they are told to try again. If they guess correctly, they are taken to a screen that gives them the definition of the word and asks them to use the word in a sentence. I have my students write their sentences on a piece of notebook paper and turn them in so I'm able to look over their answers or grade them.
This activity includes nine commonly used foreign words. The preview version contains one word only.
I plan on creating a PowerPoint version soon for all of you PC users. Come back soon!
