I use this in German I.
Students are asked to choose their favorite song and describe why they like it. Students must submit the lyrics prior to approval to verify that the songs are school appropriate. Students write a draft, then peer edit (I review peer edits before returning them to their authors) and revise. They read their paper to the class as a prepared speaking assessment, then turn it in for a written assessment. After reading their papers to the class, students play at least a clip from their favorite song. Usually I have them play the whole thing, but songs like American Pie are a little long, so I cut them to something reasonable depending on the time we have.
