*Videos are necessary for completion of this worksheet.
As of July 2017, all episodes in this purchase are available free on You Tube which would make it ideal for computer lab or homework assignments (technology access provided).
Included are 10 worksheets for episodes of the television program Forensic Files. All of the episodes are available to view online for free (my preference is through YouTube). This makes this program great for in-class, computer lab, extra credit, or homework assignments since most students will have access to the programs through a variety of means.
The question sheets go in order through each episode with a focus on the science behind each case as well as the legal circumstances. I try to provide a variety of episodes to give students a wide range of ideas on how the career of a forensic scientist works. The episodes included in this bundle package (with their season and episode number) are:
Accident or Murder? (Season 4, Episode 9)
In 1989, Nova Scotia schoolteacher Clayton Johnson left for work. Later that morning, Mrs. Molloy arrived to drop off her child at the Johnson home. She found Clayton's wife Janice Johnson lying at the bottom of the basement stairs in a pool of blood and it was determined to be an accident. Later on, Clayton Johnson married a 22-year-old member of his Pentecostal congregation and police wanted another look at the case.
Bitter Brew (Season 11, Episode 41)
It was one of the most brazen crimes of the 20th century. Adolph Coors, chairman of the Coors Brewing Company, was kidnapped and held for ransom prompting one of the most intense manhunts in United States history.
Bound for Jail (Season 8, Episode 22)
A woman is found dead in a ravine near a jogging path. Crucial crime scene evidence had been washed away by severe thunderstorms. Twice, the trail turned cold. Then, almost 20 years later, an old hat and a chip of stainless steel no longer than a fingernail brought the killer to justice.
Broken Promises (Season 5, Episode 14)
When Russ Stager, a popular gym teacher, is found dead of what appears to be an accidental gunshot wound, his family is suspicious. They think his wife may have planned his murder. When police find that her previous husband died in questionable circumstances, they re-examine the crime scene and find evidence that the death was no accident. But it is a tape recorded by the victim just before his death that tells the true story of his strange marriage and his wife's insatiable greed.
Deadly Knowledge (Season 5, Episode 19)
When 23-year-old college co-ed Tina Biggar goes missing, her boyfriend and family fear she has been murdered. A police investigation reveals details about her past that no one, not even her closest friends, suspected: She was a student by day and a $100-an-hour call-girl by night. Her many clients were all suspects in her disappearance, as was her boyfriend. But when her body is discovered, police obtain evidence that reveals that her killer was former client Kenneth Tranchida, as well as more details about her bizarre double-life and its tragic consequences.
Dinner and a Movie (Season 8, Episode 10)
Time of death becomes pivotal after a pregnant woman is found murdered in her air-conditioned bedroom. A striking similarity between her death and an HBO movie gives forensic examiners the clues they need to thaw out the alibi of a cold-blooded killer.
Foundation of Lies (Season 5, Episode 12)
Police suspect Dr. John "Jack" Boyle in the disappearance of his wife Noreen when he signs mortgage papers for a new house with a woman pretending to be his spouse. After witnesses see Dr. Boyle near an area where a new pile of concrete was found and the using the recollections of their 12-year-old son regarding what he heard the night his mother went missing, the police find Noreen's body in the basement of Dr. Boyle's new house.
Grounds for Indictment (Season 8, Episode 35)
A drive-by shooting leaves one man dead and another seriously wounded. Cell phone calls and shell casings point to a suspect, but authorities are unable to place him at the crime scene. When a forensic geologist compared soil from the crime scene with soil found in the wheel wells of the suspect's car, he proved that dirt is anything but dumb.
Speck of Evidence (Season 3, Episode 11)
In 1984, nine-year-old Vicki Lynne Hoskinson left on her pink bicycle to run an errand for her mother. She never returned to home. Vicki's bike was found abandoned later that afternoon on a nearby street, slightly damaged, but there was no sign of her. Police investigators found that Frank Jarvis Atwood, released after serving time for two child molestation convictions in California, had been in the Tucson area, but was now gone. The FBI decided to confiscate Atwood's car to search for forensic evidence. The nickel on the bike was tested and found to be the same as the nickel on Atwood's bumper. The two-way transfer was the deciding factor. Atwood was sentenced to death.
Two in a Million (Season 11, Episode 40)
A millionaire and his family were executed in their own home. For three years, the murders went unsolved and then a 30-year-old box of ammunition and some fluorescent fibers revealed the ultimate betrayal.
Questions on the assignments go in order and will help students remain focused on key science topics. Two extended response questions are on the back of the worksheet (description and compare/contrast) which are perfect for reflection and discussion at the conclusion of the video. There are also additional writing prompts for every episode included with a power point for easy classroom display.
The worksheets are given as a MS-Word document which will allow easy modifying to fit your class.
*Besides You Tube, the video needed for viewing can be purchased through a variety of sellers both as physical media or through streaming viewing (including Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu - availability does change).
Thank you for your purchase and for taking the time to leave me positive feedback.
