This purchase is for a bundle assignment package. Included are 10 worksheets for episodes of the television program Forensic Files. All of the episodes are available to view online for free (my preference is through YouTube). This makes this program great for in-class, computer lab, extra credit, or homework assignments since most students will have access to the programs through a variety of means on their own time. Each episode is 20-22 minutes in length.
The question sheets go in order through each episode with a focus on the science behind each case as well as the legal circumstances. I try to provide a variety of episodes to give students a wide range of ideas on how the career of a forensic scientist works. The episodes included in this bundle package (with their season and episode number) are:
A TIGHT LEASH (Season 11, Episode 30)
A family is thrown into turmoil when the mother begins receiving letters from a stalker. A short time later the mother is found murdered in a store parking lot. Was the stalker her killer? Forensic experts will need a dirt expert, handwriting analyst, and photogrammist to help connect all the clues and capture the killer.
BEST FOOT FORWARD (Season 13, Episode 50)
An exotic dancer disappears and her family fear she has been murdered. Police originally suspect the dancer’s boyfriend but then a message on her cell phone leads the investigation in a new direction where blood samples, anthropology, and cadaver dogs will all be needed to help close the case.
DRESSED TO KILL (Season 7, Episode 25)
A young girl goes missing and is presumed dead. Her father fails a polygraph test and admits to killing her but is he the real killer or simply psychologically broken from the loss of his daughter? The case will go cold for years before a second murder helps police connect forensic evidence and identify the killer.
MAKING A COLLAR (Season 9, Episode 11)
In England a teenager disappears while walking through the woods. Nine months later her body is found wrapped in plastic bags and twine. Investigators have no DNA evidence or fingerprints but a wealth of trace evidence will eventually lead them to a killer who has killed before.
A SHARPER IMAGE (Season 12, Episode 1)
A young girl is taken from her home during the night and murdered. Police arrest several men but forensic evidence clears them all. With only bite marks and hair samples to work with forensic experts work to capture the real killer…or is it killers?
SHELL GAME (Season 11, Episode 25)
In Nashville, a scuba diver and his fiancé are found murdered in the smoldering remains of their house fire. The fire destroyed all of the evidence including most of the victims. Forensic experts only find one solid piece of evidence that survived the flames – a lone bullet. Will this be enough to catch and convict the killers?
SHOT OF VENGEANCE (Season 8, Episode 9)
A nurse is diagnosed with both HIV and Hepatitis C. She claims she was purposely infected through a shot given by her former lover and doctor. Police are skeptical but have to determine if the nurse’s claims can be proven. Document analysts and genetic experts will be called in to help close what would become a landmark case.
SOLE SEARCHING (Season 10, Episode 35)
In Lansing, Michigan a woman calls 9-1-1 during a home invasion and then is murdered. There is little forensic evidence at the crime scene so police attempt to collect shoe prints on pieces of shattered glass from the broken back door. Will the partial prints be enough to find and capture a killer? Forensic Field - Podiatry
WHEEL OF MISFORTUNE (Season 12, Episode 4)
A woman leaves a casino and disappears? Police learn that she was involved in a tumultuous relationship, but was her physically abusive boyfriend the cause? It will take blood evidence, computer searches, and security camera footage to help police determine what really happened on the night the victim vanished.
WRITING ON THE WALL (Season 13, Episode 36)
A woman is found dead in her apartment. She has been fatally stabbed. Investigators must now eliminate a long list of suspects in order to find the killer. In the end a pizza box and some skin cells found under the victim’s fingernails will help close the case.
Questions on each assignment go in order and will help students remain focused on key science topics. Two extended response questions are on the back of the worksheet (description, sequence, compare/contrast, etc…) which are perfect for reflection and discussion at the conclusion of the video. All worksheets are provided as MS-Word documents so you can edit as needed. Answer sheets are not provided. A power point is also provided with 10 additional writing prompt questions (one per episode) that go beyond those provided on the worksheet. This is a great way to begin class the following day (or perhaps a “pop quiz” to see who watched the episode).
I hope you and your students find this purchase useful and it gives them great insight into the important field of forensic science. Please check my TPT store for additional Forensic Files worksheets, bundles, and informational articles.
