Description

“Forensic Files” is a video series that explains how forensic science is used to solve brutal crimes, unexplained accidents, and illness outbreaks. The series was originally known as “Medical Detectives” and it aired from 1996-2011. Each episode highlights a case from the initial incident until the resolution of the mystery. Each video is approximately 22 minutes in length and many would be a great addition to any CTE or STEM class. Caution: Some episodes contain content that may not be suitable for younger viewers, such as adult situations, recreations of crimes, or photos of deceased people.

The “Core Evidence” episode covers the efforts to discover the cause of a mysterious sickness affecting several children in Seattle, Washington, which turned out to be E. coli contracted from unpasteurized apple juice. The case features a medical explanation of how E. coli causes sickness, DNA testing to match strains of the bacteria, and the importance of pasteurization.

The video viewing guide is a resource that will keep students engaged in the video and is thorough enough to serve as a great study guide for later use. The “Core Evidence” guide has a total of 15 short answer, true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and reflection questions with 17 available points. The guide is 1 page long (the thumbnails above may not be shown accurately), and an answer key is also included. The file is in MS Word format for easy alteration by teachers, such as removing questions for a shorter version. The actual video is not included, this is only a viewing guide.
