*Videos are necessary for completion of these worksheets. Please make sure you have access to the correct videos for each (both use the 21-minute runtime versions)
As of January 2017, episodes of Forensic Files can be found FREE on You Tube and through various pay streaming services. The two episodes in this collection can also be purchased as DVDs in the Forensic Files : Medical Mysteries Collection V1 (available at Amazon or other media sellers).
This two video worksheet purchase focuses on science and forensic methods that were needed to solve crimes, murders, and strange medical situations that might otherwise have remained unsolved. These are great episodes to demonstrate to students the value of science and technology combined with the medical field.
*Bitter Potion (Season 2 Episode 5)
Peggy Carr developed mysterious flu symptoms that no doctor was able to diagnose, until a neurologist noticed her ailments were similar to that of a person poisoned by Thallium. Pye Carr instantly became a prime suspect when the poison eventually killed his wife Peggy. Although there were traces of the poison around Pye's belongings, the FBI did not feel Pye matched the psychological profile of the killer. Instead, they turned their attention to the Carr's next door neighbor George James Trepal, who had an extensive chemistry background and even used Thallium poisoning as a plot device in a MENSA Murder Mystery Weekend that he hosted.
*’til Death Do Us Part (Season 2 Episode 9)
In 1991, Robert Curley was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome when he arrived at the hospital with excruciating leg pains. However, doctors became suspicious during Robert's second admission and tested him for Thallium poisoning, which proved positive and Robert died shortly thereafter. Autopsy showed that Robert ingested more poison a few days before his death. Investigators also discovered that Robert's wife Joann was waiting to collect her previous husband's life insurance (from his accidental death) and disagreed with the way Robert wanted to spend it. Joann would then collect additional life insurance if Robert suffered from an accidental death. Joann was convicted of Robert's murder six years later.
Questions on the assignments go in order and will help students remain focused on key forensic science topics. Two extended response questions are on the back of each worksheet (description, sequence, compare/contrast, etc...) which are perfect for reflection on the importance of these ground breaking cases.
Both worksheets are given as MS-Word documents which will allow easy modifying to best fit the needs of your students.
Thank you for your purchase and for taking the time to leave me positive feedback.
