*Videos are necessary for completion of these worksheets. Please make sure you have access to the correct videos for each (both use the 21-minute runtime versions)
As of January 2017, episodes of Forensic Files can be found FREE on You Tube and through various pay streaming services. The two episodes in this collection can also be purchased as DVDs in the Forensic Files : Medical Mysteries Collection V1 (available at Amazon or other media sellers).
This two video worksheet purchase focuses on science and forensic methods that were needed to solve crimes, murders, and strange medical situations that might otherwise have remained unsolved. These are great episodes to demonstrate to students the value of science and technology combined with the medical field.
*Legionnaires’ Disease (Season 1 Episode 7)
Legionnaires' disease is one of the most famous medical detective stories, especially irritating for its missteps and frustrations. When 180 Legionnaires contract pneumonia-like symptoms after a Philadelphia Convention and 29 of them die, doctors and scientists are mystified. The determination of one scientist helps to determine the cause and likely vector of this deadly disease.
*Deadly Formula (Season 3 Episode 8)
In 1989, David and Patricia Stallings moved to their dream home in Hillsboro, Missouri. There they had their first child, Ryan, whose health took a turn for the worse by the time he was five months old. Ryan had a series of blood tests, which showed unusually high levels of ethylene glycol, a main ingredient in antifreeze. Patricia Stallings was arrested, and a few days after, Ryan Stallings died. While in prison, Patricia was admitted to the hospital, and gave birth to another son, David. David suffered from the same symptoms as his dead brother Ryan, but was not in Patricia's care at the time. After re-testing both Ryan's and David's blood, results showed there were no evidence of ethylene glycol. Patricia Stallings was released on July 30, 1991, for a crime she never committed. It was determined that both children had a rare genetic disorder.
Questions on the assignments go in order and will help students remain focused on key forensic science topics. Two extended response questions are on the back of each worksheet (description, sequence, compare/contrast, etc...) which are perfect for reflection on the importance of these ground breaking cases.
Both worksheets are given as MS-Word documents which will allow easy modifying to best fit the needs of your students.
Thank you for your purchase and for taking the time to leave me positive feedback.
