Description

This is a middle school forensic science unit. This unit includes scenario (with crime scene photos) and activities on DNA sequencing, fingerprints, pedigrees, and chemical unknowns.

Students are given the background on the crime including biographies of possible suspects.

Students will work through the evidence at the crime scene to determine who committed the crime. There are four sets of crime scene activity worksheets. Each set includes background information, student and instructor handouts, and a 5e lesson outline. The activities include:

• Fingerprint activities. Student will learn how to analyze fingerprints and how to dust for prints.

• Pedigree chart worksheet. Students will be provided a pedigree from the dog show and analyze the pedigree to help determine motive for the crime.

• Mystery Powder Lab. This lab includes background information, supply list, and mystery powder answer sheet.

• DNA fingerprinting worksheet. DNA fingerprinting is an important part of forensic science and is becoming more important in health science and other areas. It is also expensive and can be somewhat dangerous without adequate supervision. This DNA fingerprinting worksheet allows students to see the results (and video links are also provided). This is the final step in the investigation. DNA fingerprinting worksheet answers are provided.

I've also added photos of suspects and crime scene photos.

This is a forensic science unit with introduction, conclusion, and 4 activities. This would take 4-5, 45-minute class periods or more depending on extension activities.

Kids love applying the knowledge they have gained and forensic science activities are a great way to make that happen. This is designed as a middle school forensics unit, but is adaptable for a wider age range and could be used in small settings as well.
