Connecting literacy and science in a fun, engaging way!!!

These activities will take 1-3 class periods, depending on how you use them. They were created for a high school forensics course, but are appropriate any middle or high school class looking for a fun break from the ordinary. The interdisciplinary connections in this lesson are a great way to tie literacy standards into your science classroom.

THERE'S BEEN A MURDER ON CAMPUS!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Police have deemed the murder of beloved teacher, Mrs. Holmes, an unfortunate accident but her forensics students know better! Use clues from the case to determine the motive and analyze blood types of the suspects and blood spatter patterns left at the scene to solve the mystery.

This product contains five unique activities including a stations lab and an interdisciplinary culminating activity requiring students to make a claim substantiated by evidence from their experiences.

This activity was created for a high school forensics class studying serology (blood). Detailed lesson plans and pictures are included with simple to follow instructions to set up and conduct the lab portion of the activity, which involves creating synthetic blood to test different blood types.

Printable station signs for each station can be laminated for repeated use.

Reading the case
Engaging newspaper-like article grabs students' attention with details on the case. Students will use evidence from the text along with evidence from their activities to solve the crime.

Activity 1 - Determine a motive
Students will determine motives for each of the three suspects based on their history with the victim

Activity 2 - Blood Spatter Analysis of the Crime Scene
Students will analyze spatter patterns at the scene of the crime to try and create a story of what REALLY happened.

Activity 3 - Recreating the evidence
Use synthetic blood (easy to make instructions included) to determine how the spatter patterns at the scene were created.

Activity 4 - Blood Type Analysis
Six-station lab activity which teaches students to determine blood type just like in a real forensics lab!

Activity 5 - Solving The Case
Interdisciplinary writing component asking students to solve the case based on evidence that they've gathered.
