Forest World is a novel of verse, written by the Newbery Honor-Winning Author,
Margarita Engle. Edver was taken by his mother from the island of Cuba to
Miami, Florida so she could pursue her life as a cryptozoologist. Her daughter,
one year older than Edver, was left behind to stay with her father and Abuelo.
Luza feels abandoned by her mother. When Edver is sent to live with his father,
sister, and abuelo in the forest of Cuba, it is a culture shock for Edver and his
Cuban family. The love between brother and sister does not grow easily. What
they have in common is their love of living organisms, rare and otherwise.
My student prepared Guided Reading packet contains the best of Reading
Comprehension Strategies as well as helping students to understand the historical
changes that occurred in Cuba. Environmental issues are key in this story –
poachers and people whose desires and mission are to save wildlife. Students
will also explore the complicated relationships between parents and children who
are separated by an ocean. There are a variety of Post-Reading Activities for
students to pursue.
