The 2nd book of the Hazelwood High Trilogy by S. M. Draper continues the story that started with Tears of a Tiger, only focuses on Gerald and his half sister Angel. This is a heart wrenching story of chemical, physical and sexual abuse and all the pain and anguish it causes for the children who end up in the paths of the abusers. It is also the story of the heroic older brother who goes to great lengths to protect his younger sister from the perpetrator. Draper's books are engaging for young readers who just want to read the continuation of the story. The story also helps open lines of communication about similar incidents that may be occurring in readers real lives and encourages them to talk to a trusted adult.
Draper's books are easy to understand and very interesting to students who generally refuse to read anything, so are awesome springboards into improving reading skills.
