This unit sheds light on six relatively unknown Black Americans who represent the diversity of Black experience in pre-Civil War America. They illustrate a broad range of talents and remarkable accomplishments for the times in which they lived.

Phillis Wheatley - Poet (c. 1753 - December 5, 1784)
Benjamin Banneker - Author, Surveyor, Farmer (Nov. 9, 1731 - Oct. 9, 1806)
James Armistead Lafayette - Revolutionary Spy (1760 - August 9, 1830)
John Brown Russwurm - Editor and Statesman (1799 - 1851)
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - Poet, Author, Abolitionist, Suffragist (1825 - 1911)
Jules Lion - Artist and Photographer (c.1810 - 1866)
The exercises in the unit focus on the writing skills of comparison, contrast, note taking and paragraph writing are stressed. In addition to the biographies, note sheet and essay worksheets and a rubric are included. These can serve as templates for later note taking and short essay assignments as you wish.
