What educators are saying

Secondary Sara's resources has been a godsend for me this year and this has been so helpful in developing writing skills.
This resource was really helpful as an overall review at the end of the year. Finally, my students stopped making the same mistakes with formal English! I love the notetaking aspect.

Description

Do your writers still sound like students instead of professionals? Do they need help avoiding conversational word choices and tone?

Use this lesson to teach students how to write “in a formal style” to meet CCSS for informative AND argumentative writing in middle and high school.

This EDITABLE 26-slide presentation with guided notes scaffolds students through the process of establishing purpose/relevance: defining formal writing, learning 10+ tips for writing formally, 2 practice revision paragraphs, a mini-quiz, and directions to revise a paragraph of their own writing! (Answer keys to revisions and the mini-quiz included). Memes and hashtag captions help keep students’ attention.

Topics covered include slang/conversational tone, active verbs, active vs. passive voice, “upgrading” to better synonyms, formal transitions, removing personal pronouns, asking hypothetical questions, not labeling essay items (i.e. “My next point is about…”), and avoiding absolutes.
