Formative assessment is where it’s at right now, and your students should be able to assess their own learning.
Do your students understand if they have mastered a given skill or need more practice? Can your class verbalize what they are learning and where they are at within the process? Would you like them to?
This packet of varying scales will allow your students to assess their learning throughout the formative process and will help them to answer all those questions above and more.
Choose the scale right for the subject or chapter you're currently teaching, 3 scales for 3 main objectives to master, 5 scales for 5 main objectives to master, up to 8 scales for 8 objectives to master. As the kids begin to learn that key component in the curriculum, they follow the provided light bulb color guide and color in the light bulb on their scale based on their own assessment of their learning. When they feel as if they have mastered the topic, the light bulb is completely colored.
After all the light bulbs are colored in, students should be ready to rock their summative assessment. If a student isn't able to color in a light bulb all the way, that's a great teachable moment about when we need to reach out and ask for extra support. Plus it provides you, the teacher, with feedback on exactly who needs help and where they need it.
Not only does this make kids more accountable for their learning, but it also satisfies many of the teacher evaluation changes that require teachers to demonstrate more use of formative assessment, put learning in the hands of students, and show a partnership between teacher and student in the classroom.
