### Description

Get a complete, ready-to-print unit covering topics from the Algebra 1 TEKS including writing linear equations in slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form; writing and solving equations involving direct variation; and formulating linear models using linear regression.

UNIT OVERVIEW:

Students will continue their study of linear functions, graphs, and equations while focusing on writing 2-variable linear equations.

Students will begin by drawing on prior knowledge to write and solve mathematical and applied problems involving direct variation, including representing the relationship using tables and graphs.

Students will then learn how to formulate 2-variable linear equations in slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form given information in a variety of ways.

Finally, students will be introduced to using technology to perform linear regression to formulate linear models that represent data from applied situations. They will calculate and analyze r, the correlation coefficient, to determine the strength of the linear association of the data. Students will also determine if associations show causation.

Students will:

• write and solve equations involving direct variation
• distinguish between proportional and non-proportional linear relationships
• represent direct variation equations and proportional linear relationships in multiple ways
• write the domain and range of proportional linear relationships in applied situations

Lesson 2: Writing Linear Equations I (Slope-Intercept Form)

Students will:

• formulate 2-variable linear equations in slope-intercept form given a graph, verbal description, table, two points, or the slope and the y-intercept

Lesson 3: Writing Linear Equations II (Point-Slope Form)

Students will:

• formulate 2-variable linear equations in point-slope form given a graph, verbal description, table, two points, or the slope and a point on the line
• rewrite point-slope form equation as slope-intercept form equations

Lesson 4: Writing Linear Equations III (Standard Form)

Students will:

• formulate 2-variable linear equations in standard form given a graph, verbal description, table, two points, or the slope and a point on the line
• rewrite point-slope form equations and slope-intercept form equations as standard form equations

Lesson 5: Equations of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

Students will:

• write the equations of horizontal and vertical lines graphed on the coordinate plane and state the slope of the lines (zero or undefined)
• write the equation of a line that passes through a given point and is parallel to a given line using the point-slope formula
• write the equation of a line that passes through a given point and is perpendicular to a given line using the point-slope formula

Lesson 6: Writing Equations Using Linear Regression

Students will:

• calculate linear models for sets of data by performing linear regression using technology and by using algebraic methods
• calculate r, the correlation coefficient, and use it to interpret the strength of the data’s linear association
• determine whether associations represent causation

EACH LESSON CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS:

• The Lesson Notes are designed for use as a note-taking guide combined with guided practice.
• Practice A and Practice B are suitable for use as in-class practice and homework. Two comparable forms are included for increased versatility.
• The Exit Ticket is designed for a quick concept check at the end of the class period.
