How fortunate we are to have these cookies as a part of vocabulary lessons!
Your students will practice context skills, inferential vocabulary, and generate understanding of vocabulary from life experience in these themed, creative vocabulary activities. Students will work with the nuances of language, a bit with prefixes and roots, and have the opportunity to exercise critical thinking in graphic design and cartooning. Finally, let’s make a keepsake gift for someone special—an origami fortune cookie with an inspirational, motivational, or endearing message. It’s good fun and yummy, too!
Your students will work with Common Core Standards in vocabulary, and the strategies used in this set of activities will help students prepare for contextual vocabulary tasks on state tests in reading and writing.
I use these activities with my advanced literacy 3rd and 4th graders. They will also be on target for 5th grade through middle school as well. Plan for 90 minutes to 2+ hours of class time—depending on whether you choose to do all of the activities.
In this bundle, you’ll get a ready-to-print interpretive vocabulary activity, examples of student work, templates for graphic design extension activities, and plans to make origami fortune cookies which make great keepsake gifts or holiday ornaments.
