This project is a place-based look into energy conservation, renewable and non-renewable resources, and science process skills. It also includes the authentic and meaningful evaluation, interpretation, and communication of data. For COMMON CORE content standards met by this unit, please refer to the attached document, “Local Food Project and Standards.”
The overall strategy for this unit pertaining to a place-based, inquiry-based experience is to obtain information from food labels at the local grocery store, measure the distance each food travels in a consistent manner, translate the information to graphs and maps, and discuss the impact of non-local foods on energy conservation and non-renewable resource reserves with an emphasis on fossil fuels.
