1. This document can be printed in color and spread around at different stations – each station covers one time period in geologic history.
2. At each station, set out any fossils from that time period. (I use Fisher’s Advanced Fossil Collection, which contains 30 fossils plus assorted other fossils from my personal collection). The print-outs can help students to identify the fossils which they observe and read to learn more about these organisms’ lives.
3. At each station, depending on your fossils you may want to set out hand lenses or stereoscopes.
4. The lesson references an activity “Performances in Geologic Time.” I have student research the different geologic periods in groups to write skits. They all perform their skits and jot down take-away messages (brief) from each performance. This leads into the lab activity, and if you do this I recommend reminding students to bring their notes with them to each lab station!
