Make a Fossil: performed in Dixie cups and models how cast fossils are formed. Use natural objects or plastic animals from a dollar store. Teacher information and student activity sheets provided. Includes one-page Fossil Science Institute report.

The Traveling Continents: a cut and paste activity that uses blue construction paper and South America and Africa continent templates. Shows how the fossils found on both continents can be explained by the continents separating over time.

Petrified Fossils: An activity that demonstrates how some fossils are formed from petrification and crystallization. A saturated solution of Epsom salts is prepared and then poured over sponges that are cut in the shape of a bone. Teacher information and student activity sheets provided.

Analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the organisms and the environments in which they lived long ago. Examples of data could include type, size, and distributions of fossil organisms. Examples of fossils and environments could include marine fossils found on dry land, tropical plant fossils found in Arctic areas, and fossils of extinct organisms. Assessment does not include identification of specific fossils or present plants and animals. Assessment is limited to major fossil types and relative ages.
