This essential, prerequisite skill is required in order to learn how to read. Do your students understand the concept of a word? Give this simple test and find out. This test is part of a series of 14 assessments, that gradually increases in complexity. Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) is very useful for individualizing instruction, parent/teacher conferences, progress monitoring, and pinpointing strengths and weaknesses. These assessments are also an effective tool that I use during formal administrative and PLT meetings to justify early intervention services when I have concerns about a student's lack of progress.
Teachers can (1) show exactly how much growth a student has made each semester, and (2) provide concrete data to parents and administrators. (3) I also use the data to create very simple activities parents can use at home to help their children build a strong foundational skill set.
This free resource also has definitions of common words and phrases to facilitate testing for assessments 1-12.
