This essential, prerequisite skill is required in order to learn how to read. Are your students able to isolate the first sound in words? Give this simple test and find out. This test is part of a series of 14 assessments, that gradually increases in complexity. Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) is very useful for individualizing instruction, parent/teacher conferences, progress monitoring, and pinpointing strengths and weaknesses. These assessments are also an effective tool that I use during formal administrative and PLT meetings to justify early intervention services when I have concerns about a student's lack of progress.
Teachers can (1) show exactly how much growth a student has made each semester, and (2) provide concrete data to parents and administrators. (3) I also use the data to create very simple activities parents can use at home to help their children build a strong foundational skill set.
