Foundational Skills Task Cards

These task cards are a perfect way to determine if your students have mastered foundational skills. You'll be amazed when you find that students in grades 4 and 5 often need a review of these important skills. This can happen if the skills aren't reviewed year to year.

There are 24 cards

Activities include:

Write past, present, participle tense forms of verbs

Identification of long vowel sounds in one syllable words.

Fill in vowels in words with blanks to make them real words.

Remove letters from words to give them short vowel sounds.

Add vowels to words to give them long sounds

Determine long or short vowel sounds based on CVC, double vowel or VCE.

Determine the sounds of the vowel combination EA in one syllable words.

Determine the sounds of OO in one syllable words. (book, versus cool)

Determine the sounds of Y as either a vowel or consonant. Examples: YES and BEAUTY (Y has the long E vowel sound)

Write the number of syllables in words.

Divide two syllable words into syllables

Writing singular and plural forms of nouns

Add prefixes UN and RE to words

Identify base words that have prefixes and suffixes.

Identify suffixes in words.

Identififytwo words that form contractions

Put words in alphabetical order

Formation of compound words using given words

Distinguishing the sounds of “S” and “Z”

The cards can be used as a review of some of the Common Core foundational skills. Skills are those that children should know in grades 3, 4, and 5. Can be used with second grade students also to help determine if they've achieved mastery. The title of the cover includes the words "Common Core" to alert teachers that many of the activities are Common Core related.
