Students use these reading logs to record their thinking while independently reading. The document includes 11 reading logs, which can be used with any literature selection.
Logs 1-9: characters, setting, developing and modifying view of characters as you read more, using informational text to understand historical fiction better
Logs 10-12: context clues in informational text, informational text structure
Each log includes space for a student's name, title of book selection, and specific questions to guide thinking about the reading skill. The Common Core learning target in kid-friendly "I Can" language is printed on the top of each log along with specific standards alignment. The last page is a checklist for record-keeping so that teachers can keep track of completion of logs and mastery of skills.
In my classroom, I use these reading logs after a guided reading lesson. Students work independently on them, and they have 2 or 3 days on each log before we move on to the next one. Sometimes, I let them read any book they choose (which works well for general logs like main idea), but other times I provide copies of a specific text (like TIME for Kids, Weekly Reader, or a poetry selection) when they will need to find something very specific such as figurative language or historical events with causes and effects. This way I can make sure that everyone has a text that suits the prompt. Then, when they finish the log, they can continue reading the text or return to their own choice of book.
I like to print them front/back and shrink them to two to a page (to save paper), but in the file each log is one full page.
