This game is designed to give students practice working with 6-digit numbers and learning the value of each place. Students will add and subtract 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000 from six-digit numbers while modeling these numbers on a place value mat using number disks. They will then compare their number to their partner's, further reinforcing their place value understanding.
This activity can easily be scaffolded by restricting the size of the number students create and the change cards they use. For example, some students might work on making 4-digit numbers and adding/subtracting 10, 100, and 1,000 -- while others might be making 6-digit numbers and adding/subtracting 10,000 and 100,000.
This version of the game was designed to complement or replace EngageNY Grade 4, Module 1, Lesson 6. It can easily be used to complement any fourth grade lesson on place value.
Place Value More or Less addresses Common Core State Standard 4.NBT.1 and 4.NBT.2
