What is Response to Intervention and how to do we use it in the math classroom?
Simply, RTI is a framework for using data to inform instruction by providing appropriate resources and strategies for student learning. Every student in your classroom has different needs, and differentiating instruction based on those needs is at the heart of RTI. There are three tiers in the RTI process: I, II, and III. Using the RTI process will help to ensure the development of mathematical competence which is essential for future math learning. Tier I students are performing on grade level based on the standards. Tier II students perform below grade level and can benefit from small group instruction. Tier III students test more than two years below grade level and need more intense and possibly one-on one or pull-out intervention.
The resources that are part of my Crunch Time series are structured in a way that may be used by all students in your classroom to review for the Texas year-end testing. Tier 1 Guided Practice may be used for your students who have demonstrated to be on level as a comprehensive review of each standard. It may also be used as an assessment to determine the need for further intervention. The resource includes a mini-lesson that may be used with your whole class or in small groups. Following the mini-lesson are three pages of independent practice. Independent practice should never be completed entirely independently. During independent practice, students should be monitored to check for understanding and anecdotal notes taken to determine the need for further intervention. Students who need further intervention at Tier 2 or 3 level will benefit from the Crunch Time Intervention resources for each standard.
