For short of the type of problem solving worksheet to expect, please download the Animal Word Problem worksheet available through my store on Teachers Pay Teachers.
Not just a bunch of worksheets, these pages follow a logical sequence which progressively builds each student's problem solving skills. This problem solving program, and the word problems which comprise it, was developed over my many years of teaching at the Grade 4 level. Many of the pages have an engaging theme and they are all real-world and child oriented so that the students can more easily relate to and understand the situations. All the problems require careful reading and thought, and nearly every one is accompanied by an illustration to enhance student interest. A brief teacher's guide and and answer keys are provided.
The Program Sequence:
( A page by page outline of the resource follows)
Stage 1: Addition 1 Step Word Problems - Addition problems are introduced with 6 pages of word problems. Addition keywords are introduced and students are encouraged to circle them in the problem sentences. Many of these problems contain extra numbers so careful reading is required. Students are to write an equation for each problem and then a numerical answer along with the proper word to demonstrate understanding as shown below.
Example: 65 + 42 = n 107 chocolate bars
Stage 2: Multiplication Basic Fact (Times-table) Word Problems - Multiplication is introduced with 3 pages of picture problems and grid charts. On these pages students add to pictures or highlight grid rows and columns to help them solve the problems. Extra unnecessary numbers are again included, so careful reading and thought will be required. In their problem solutions the students write equations and numerical answers as in the example above.
Stage 3: Addition and Multiplication Basic Fact (Times-table) Word Problems: These 2 pages of mixed addition and simple multiplication problems help students learn when to choose to use which of these two operations. Again the problems include extra numbers and the students write equations and numerical answers as shown below:
Example: 7 x 6 = 42 42 kittens
Stage 4: Subtraction and Addition Word Problems - After one page of purely subtraction word problems in which subtraction keywords are introduced, the next 4 pages require students to decide whether to add or subtract to find the problem solutions. The final page in this section contains some 2 step problems. When a two step problem is presented, the students will be provided with equation blanks as shown below:
Step 1: ________________________
Step 2: ________________________ Ans: _______ ________________
Stage 5: Addition, Subtraction and Basic Fact Multiplication (Times-tables) Mixed Word Problems - Over the next 3 pages the students will work to solve problems in which they have to choose from three possible mathematical operations. Some of the problems will require two steps to be solved, in which case the students will again be provided with equation blanks as shown in the above example.
Stage 6: Addition, Subtraction, and Two Digit by One Digit Multiplication Word Problems: By this stage, it is expected that the students have learned how to perform the multiplication operation. Following 1 page of entirely 2 digit by 1 digit word multiplication word problems, the next 3 pages give the students experience in solving 1 and 2 step problems involving addition, subtraction and two digit by one digit multiplication. As always, extra numbers will be included and students will be expected to write equations and a numerical answer with an appropriate word to demonstrate their understanding in the solution.
Stage 7: Introducing Division Word Problems - Over the next pages, the students learn to identify and solve division problems. This section begins with problems based on simple division facts but moves into 2 digit by 1 digit division equations.
Stage 8: Multiplication and Division Word Problems - These 3 pages help students learn to differentiate between multiplication and division situations as they work to solve 1 and 2 step problems.
Step 9: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division Word Problems - This is the final stage and includes 4 pages through which students will learn to solve 1 and 2 step problems involving any of the four mathematical operations listed above. By the end of this section and this program your students will be proficient in solving word problems at the Grade 4 level.
