Product Description
Make it easier on yourself and your Guest Teacher on a last-minute sick day. Use this product to create a resource for your grade-level team.

This product was created with the struggling district in mind. The
teacher shortage is especially hard in regards to our Guest Teachers. We are in a profession that requires more work for a sick day and I hope this product will help my fellow teachers with that. In my last district we discussed creating a system where a full day’s work of lessons are ready in a container for those days when a teacher or someone in their family falls ill suddenly.
I did not work on Math as that is an area of the day where most
districts have a specific curriculum in which they have a manual to follow.
The goal of this product is to make things easier for those suddenly sick, but some work will need to be performed ahead of time. I suggest working with your team members to create these materials and have them organized in an easy to pull-out fashion.
The portable plastic tubs with hanging files are a great way to house lesson plans, copied papers, and game materials! These can be found at Walmart, Target, office supply stores, and more.
Just think - if your team or even your building staff work together to
create three tubs for each grade level with the books placed inside
them...that is three days of you no longer needing to get up at three in the morning to put together substitute plans and bother a co-worker for where materials are located!

Three Focus Lessons (15-20 minutes in length)
Focus Lesson #1 - Read Aloud of the Picture Book with a Summarizing Activity Included (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then) which can be turned in for the teacher to read over later.

Focus Lesson #2 - Reading Response to the Read Aloud. The Common Core for ELA stresses being able to talk and write about their reading and this simple activity practices that with a guest teacher in the room.

Focus Lesson #3 - Grammar Practice with Sentence Structure
Silly Sentences with Who, Did What, When, and Where. Helping students to see the Did What should always follow the Who, but they can move around the When and Where to create more than one sentence containing the same information. I have included Big Cards that the Guest Teacher can use with the students to build sentences together with student volunteers holding up the parts of the sentence for their peers to see!

Three Daily5 Sessions (15-20 minutes in length) with the
Guest Teacher working in a simple small group lesson.
Read to Self
Reading to Someone or Listening to Reading - depending on your
classroom resources
Word Work of Boggle

Content Tie-In
Reading of a Nonfiction/Information Text with the Guest Teacher followed by structured summarizing of the article. This can be performed right with the Guest Teacher for lower grades and more independent for others. A summarizing paper is included so the classroom teacher may see their students’ work when they return.

Writing Tie-In
CCSS stresses students being able to respond to a prompt and give supporting reasons/details. I have included a prompt that is related to the Read Aloud. A packet of a table with writing support is included which is easy for both Guest Teacher and students to follow. My goal was for students to still be able to practice their writing without their classroom teacher present. This isn’t always easy to do with the different writing curriculums across districts.

Guided Reading Resources
As a guest in a classroom, things can be confusing...I included some resources which can be reused in different classrooms and with various texts.
A Scaffold for Retelling the Story
A simple graphic organizer for the Guest Teacher to use with students to summarize their Fiction work at the table. This can be used with Guided Reading books, chapter books, or another picture book

Students learn with games, and they’re fun, too! This part of the pack will require the most work from you, but it’ll be worth it on your next sick day! These games are all basic, kid-friendly, and the Guest Teacher won’t be easily confused.
