Do you remember playing Smack as a child? The quick fun paced game of who has the quickest recall/identification skills to get the card first and win! I turned this into a fraction edition. Fractions are an important unit under number sense and I find it hard to get your hands on good fraction games that students can play independently. I have seen similar games online but create one to focus mostly on first grade standards of knowing halves, thirds, fourths, and wholes. I pushed my students with rigor and deeper understanding of math in general so I have also included some extensions to the fractions for might higher thinkers.
This can easily be use for any student struggling with fractions or as an introduction to how to play the game (allowing students to focus on the rules versus the content to get a better grasp on the rules OR to have a deeper understanding to then go and create their own version of the game using the fractions focused on in their grade level and beyond!).
