### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This fun, 13 student-page, fraction project is not just aligned to the common core, it was created for the common core. We focused on 4th grade fraction standards while designing this packet for our students. Many 5th grade standards are represented as well. Students will love the challenging questions that make them think and conceptualize the common core state standards.
The work in the packet does not ask students to use algorithms, rather it asks them to logically comprehend what is happening when we work with fractions. Using the storyline of a carnival keeps the students engaged and motivated to use and understand fractions in a real-world way. We had our students complete the packet prior to learning algorithms for working with fractions, which allowed them the rigor and struggle that is so important for our students.

Possible Uses in the Classroom
Many pages can be used as performance tasks or as formative assessments. Doing these with our students allowed us many opportunities to check in with them to ensure understanding. It was a great way for students to work at her own pace, and differentiation came naturally, as we were able to do daily one-on-one and small group teaching, while the rest of the class was happily engaged in the project. This happened authentically, and we repeatedly had opportunities to teach and reteach for individual needs. There were countless "ah ha" moments...a teacher's favorite sound!

Our students loved working in this packet! They found it to be engaging and especially fun to work on in pairs or small groups. Because it includes practice in 4th grade CCSS, and some 5th grade standards, this packet is entirely appropriate for all three grades and can be used in many different ways!

Performance assessment(s)
Review for unit test or state tests
As early finisher work
As enrichment for 4th and 5th grade for an independent small group
As a whole class –because the problems are designed for multiple solution paths, every problem provides a great opportunity for students to share how they approached the problem and arrived at a solution.

Skills reviewed include:
Equivalency work
Decomposing fractions
Compare fractions
Using a variety of models-area, fraction and number lines to:
--Add, subtract, and multiply fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators
--Multiply fractions and whole numbers
Scaling-compare factor size

Solve real-world problems using area models, number lines, fraction models, pictures and equations
